Using urine, breath, oral fluid and hair samples it is possible to determine whether a candidate has been misusing drugs, safeguard current employees, and protect your company’s professional reputation.

What are the benefits of pre-employment drug and alcohol screening?

Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening can help you protect your existing employees, company reputation, and ensure you are employing the right people.

It can also help make the company’s stance on drugs and alcohol clear to any new or potential employees. Other benefits of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing include:

  • Demonstrating your commitment as a responsible employer.
  • Deterring prospective employees who are currently misusing drugs or alcohol.
  • Fulfilling your commitment to health and safety regulations.
  • Long-term cost savings (reduced absenteeism and increased productivity).

Is pre-employment screening legal?

It is completely legal in the UK to invite a prospective candidate to take a drugand/or alcohol test as part of the recruitmemnt process, and is most useful for safety  critical industries, where health and safety on the job is paramount.

However, the candidate must consent to testing, and has the right to refuse a test if they wish.

Similarly, as an employer, you have the right not to proceed with a candidate’s application if pre-employment screening is part of your company’s policy, and the candidate refuses to participate in testing.

Before implementing pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, you must have a robust substance misue policy in place, which sets out the company’s approach to screening, including pre-employment screening.

A drug and alcohol policy is a formal document that:

  • Defines the company’s position on drugs and alcohol.
  • Ensures employees are kept informed on testing methods.
  • Outlines the frequency and grounds for testing.
  • Makes it clear how substance misuse issues will be handled.
  • Having a substance misues policy, along with back-to-lab confirmation of any non-negative test results, helps ensure that your testing is legally compliant and legally defensible.

Random Drug and Alcohol Testing

  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Fast lab confirmations – next working day if required (upon receipt at Lab).
  • Rapid response on-site screening.
  • Test and confirm a ide range of drugs and their metabolites.
  • Essential for safety critical industries.
  • Bespoke testing solutions to meet your requirments.

What is random drug and alcohol testing?

Clear Link Consultancy Ltd. can provide randomised testing. Using our team to carry out the randomised testing. Using our team to carry out the random selection of staff minimises the risk of an employee claiming they have been unfairly chosen by their employer.

Random drug and alcohol testing is one of the best ways of maintaining a safe working environment for your staff.

Testing at random throughout the year greatly reduces the chances of employees using tactics to avoid testing or changing their habits in time to escape a positive result if they are misusing substances.

Random testing has also been proven to:

  • Reduce workplace incidents/accidents.
  • Boost productivty.
  • Mitigate absenteeism.
  • Reduce the number of disciplinary procedures.
  • Protect the company’s reputation.
  • Prevent financial losses.

Is random drug and alcohol testing legal?

Testing employees at random for drugs and alcohol is completely legal.

However, before implementing random drug and alcohol testing, you must ensure that your business has a robust substance misuse policy in place.

A drug and alcohol policy is a formal document that:

  • Defines the company’s stance on drugs and alcohol.
  • Ensures employees are kept informed on testing methods.
  • Outlines the frequency and grounds for testing.
  • Makes it clear how substance misuse issues will be handled.

Having a substance misue policy, along with back-to-lab confirmation of any non-negative test results, helps ensure that your testing is legally compliant and legally defensible, should an employee decide to dispute the results of the test for any reason.

Types of testing available from Clear Link Consultancy Ltd.

Oral Fluid Drug Testing

Oral Fluid Drug Testing is a method that can be used to determine whether someone is misuing drugs by taking a smaple of their saliva and analysing it for particular substances.

An immediate negative result may mean that no further action needs to be taken, but a non-negative result will then undergoconfirmation testing from the laboratory to determine exactly what substance was taken and in what quantities.

Oral Fluid Drug Testing is known as a ‘narrow window’ form of testing as its period of detection is up to 48 hours, although this can depends on the particular substance taken.

Urine Drug Testing

Urine Drug Testing is used to determine whether someone is misusing drugs by taking a sample of their urine and analysing it for particular substances.

These forms of testing can be particularly useful for onsite/point of care testing as an immediate negative result may mean that no further action is necessary. A non-negotive result may require confirmation testing from the laboratory in order to determine exactly what substance was taken and in what quantities.

Urine Alcohol Testing

Urine Alcohol Testing is used to determine whether someone has alcohol in their system by taking a sample of their urine and analysing it for alcohol.

Breathalyzer Alcohol Testing

Breathalyzer Alcohol Testing is used to determine whether someone has alcohol in their system by taking a sample of their breath and analysing it for alcohol giving an instant reading/result.

Hair Testing

Hair testing is ideal when a longer period of detection is required. This type of testing is widely used in the legal sector. The benefits of opting for hair testing include the fact that a substance will remain detectable in a sample for a considerable time after the hair has been removed from the head.

This fact makes a historical case of drug use easlier to establish. In addition, as the collection is non-invasive it is difficult to adulterate a sample.

Clear Link Consultancy Ltd. provides clients with a service to test for a wide range of substances detectable in hair samples.

Our rapid turn-around service tests for the following drugs: Amphetamine, Benzodiazepines, Cannabis (THC), Cocaine, Mephedone, Methamphetamine (including MDMA & MDEA), Opiates and Tramadol. Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) and fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) are used to detect alcohol abuse/prove abstinence.
